The walking dead season 9 episode 16
The walking dead season 9 episode 16

It's one of her best performances in all nine seasons of this show. McBride is genuinely great in these moments, conveying so much with just her eyes. She must see Lydia as both a cause of Henry's death and as someone she should care for, and who she could then lose. Carol, whose daughter was killed long ago, who had to face the horror of losing so many other children-the two sisters from the prison the weird little boy from Alexandria-always in such violent circumstances. It's Carol, more than anyone else, who has to confront her feelings in this episode. She had no choice, Alden did.Ĭarol is also obviously filled with bitterness and anger toward Lydia, though I think she realizes how unfair it is. More to the point, he became a Savior, whereas Lydia was a small child raised by her mother as a Whisperer.

I get that Alden is bitter over the death of his girlfriend, but he used to be a Savior and he should know better. (Not to mention her life up to this point hasn't exactly been very cheery.)Īlden comes right out and harasses her about the Whisperers when they see some zombies shuffling alongside them on the road. Lydia is the other character most impacted by the loss of Henry, though it's not so much his death but the reactions of the rest of the survivors that have driven her to suicidal thoughts. Carol tells him later that she'll be going on to Alexandria, handing back her wedding ring. And I hardly blame him, even though he's wrong and his jealousy is misplaced. It's one of those rare moments when Ezekiel drops the king act and gets real. It'll be easier to figure out his issues with Carol if Daryl isn't around. Losing him, and in such a brutal manner, has torn her apart.Īt one point, Ezekiel goes off to the side with Daryl and asks him to not stick around at the Hilltop. But Henry, although adopted, had been in her life for many years now and was as much a son to her as Sophia was a daughter. Carol has, of course, lost so many children at this point. And it has impacted his and Carol's marriage, as the loss of a child so often does. This is only one of the tragedies weighing down our king, however. So is the smaller cast (though, as I've argued in the past, it could be smaller still.) Of course, Ezekiel does not share my opinion. Perhaps Alpha and her Whisperers will help achieve this goal, but I every much doubt it.Įven still, winnowing the number of communities down to effectively two (Oceanside is an afterthought at this point) is a good thing. Even better I'd like to see them hit the road again. I would like to see all our characters reunited in just one community. As I continue to argue, there are too many communities and too much stagnation. But, at least for the show, I think it's a good thing. The fall of the Kingdom is a bitter blow after all this time and effort. This is one of the sadnesses hanging above our heroes. Some will go to the former, some to the latter. Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Carol (Melissa McBride) have gathered the remaining citizens of the Kingdom and along with various others like Michonne (Danai Gurira) have set out for the Hilltop and Alexandria.
